Interventional Radiology
Tomball Regional Medical Center's interventional radiology services offer minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment options for a variety of conditions including back pain, uterine fibroids and conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels.
Interventional radiology uses advanced imaging techniques to guide doctors as they perform procedures using small instruments. These procedures are minimally invasive, meaning they require only a small incision. As a result, recovery times are typically short and general anesthesia isn’t usually necessary.
Because interventional radiology procedures are relatively easy on the patient, they are frequently the only viable therapeutic option for critically ill patients unable to tolerate surgery. A patient may also choose an interventional radiology procedure as an alternative to a more invasive procedure.
Tomball Regional's interventional radiology department includes experts in a variety of minimally invasive procedures, including:
- Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). This procedure can be done as a nonsurgical alternative to hysterectomy for women who have uterine fibroids. UFE works by blocking blood flow to the fibroids without harming the uterus. Learn more.
- Vertebroplasty. This procedure can help treat compression fractures in the spine, which are often caused by osteoporosis. It's a less-invasive alternative to traditional back surgery. Learn more.
- Angiography. This test checks for problems with blood flow in the arteries.
- Angioplasty/Vascular Stenting. Angioplasty can be done to open clogged arteries. Stents may be placed once the arteries are opened to help keep them from closing again.
- Biopsies. A biopsy removes a small tissue sample that can be tested in order to diagnose or rule out a variety of health problems.
- GI Procedures. For example, a gastrostomy (feeding) tube can be placed in the stomach when a person can't take in enough food by mouth. The tube can be placed using a small cut in the skin and guided to the stomach using x-rays.
- Percutaneous Nephrostomy. This procedure uses a small rubber tube, called a catheter to drain urine from the kidney.
- Stent Grafts for Aortic Aneurysm. This procedure involves removing the bulging section of the artery and replacing it with an artificial graft.
- Thrombolysis. This procedure breaks up and removes blood clots.
- Vascular Access Procedures. For example, our interventional radiology team uses Port-A-Caths to inject drugs and withdraw blood samples many times without multiple sticks with a needle.
